Ever scrolled down your Twitter timeline and seen people tweeting about wanting that old school R&B back? The golden era between the 90’s and early 2000’s? I have, and while those days may be well and truly over, its safe to say that R&B is making a major comeback, not just in the US but in the UK too. Artists like Usher,  Trey Songz and Chris Brown have helped to keep the flame alive and in recent years artists like The Weeknd, August Alsina,  PARTYNEXTDOOR and  Bryson Tiller have come in to help carry the burden. In no specific order here’s PART 2 of my list of artists in the UK Scene that are helping to form an R&B resurgence not seen since the days of Craig David:

ANGEL (@thisisangel)

Angel is one of the more well known artists in this list, and while he may have been around for a while, it is only in the last few years that he seems to have returned to his R&B roots. I used to watch his SBTV freestyles and while I wasn’t the biggest fan of his music, I could see the potential in him.

After he signed his deal with Island Records, he went commercial with singles like the hit “Wonderful” and “Time After Time”  among others. But its when Angel released the mixtape “Possession With Intent” that I thought “FINALLY”. It is everything you could ask for from a UK R&B artist and was widely slept on, however I urge you check out the video for the “On The Low” remix featuring Wretch 32, Eric Bellinger, Dappy and Jeremih.

This new R&B focused Angel seems to be staying, as his newest singles “Rude Boy” and “Hop On” (which samples Keith Sweat’s “Get Up on It”) are not only in the R&B lane but also blend 90’s bangers within the production. You may not know that Angel not only writes his own music but produces all of it too. He’s definitely one to watch out for, especially after signing with Motown Records (US) and working closely with Swizz Beats, which has enabled him to meet artists such as Brandy and James Fauntelroy and in the near future Chris Brown.

SNE (@SNE__)

SNE is another artist that likes to blend things together. Whether it be rapping and singing, 90’s R&B with modern day trap, this guy can do it all, and does it so well. I’ve been a fan since his first few videos on SBTV. His mixtape Essence” is a masterpiece (hard to believe its his first body of work) and he is definitely one of the best the UK has to offer. I could go on about this guys talent for a while but don’t just take my word for it, listen for yourself. He’s truly lived up to his name of Hackneys Golden Child.

NAO (thisNAO)

In October 2014 Nao released her first EP, So Good, it reached number 4 on the iTunes electronic chart and the title track made the BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra national playlists in the United Kingdom. This was followed by a second EP in 2015, the same year she played Glastonbury for the first time. Basically, she’s a big deal.

In September 2015, Nao was named as a nominee for best newcomer at the MOBO Awards. She also finished in third place in the BBC Sound of 2016 contest. Her music can be described as being a blend of classic soul/R&B melodies and cutting edge production. She released her debut album For All We Know on 29 July 2016 to universal acclaim, and at the time of writing it sits at number 17 in the Official UK Album Charts.

Ray BLK is a singer from South East London, and if you haven’t heard of her yet, then you soon will. Her Souncloud only has 4 tracks on it, and she only has two videos out, but when one of them features the People’s Prince, Stormzy, then you know she must be talented.

Her EP Everybody Loves Ray is expected to drop later this year, so expect more street tales and experiences of life in South London, as well as more personal stories. Ray BLK is without a doubt one of the UK’s rising stars.
